About This Hotel

Grand Hotel Villa de France was founded in thelate 19th century, at a time when Tangier was a truly international city open to Europe and Africa. The hotel welcomed diplomats, artists, and merchants from around the world. Its location was carefully chosen on a peaceful hilltop, overlooking the old medina, the port, and the Mediterranean Sea, offering guests a refined retreat away from the city’s bustle.

During the first half of the 20th century, the hotel became a symbol of elegance and refined hospitality. It hosted prominent cultural and artistic figures who left a lasting mark on Tangier’s history, among them the renowned painter “Henri Matisse“, who drew inspiration from the city’s light and colors. One of the hotel’s rooms still bears his name in tribute.

After the end of the Second World War, as Tangier’s international role began to change, the hotel entered a long period of quiet decline and eventually closed its doors in 1992. Yet it was never forgotten.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the hotel underwent a meticulous restoration that respected its original spirit while blending historic architecture with modern comfort. In 2014, it reopened its doors, preserving its timeless character and adding a contemporary touch of luxury.
